Taiz Rights Center Reports 1,444 Houthi Violations and 367 Civilian Casualties in October
The Taiz Rights Center has documented 1,444 human rights violations committed against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Taiz Governorate during October 2026, resulting in 367 casualties, including deaths, injuries, and abductions.
In a report titled "Taiz Under Fire and Siege," released on November 5, the center detailed that the documented violations—spanning from October 1 to October 31—led to the deaths of 54 civilians, including 19 children and 13 women. Furthermore, 147 individuals sustained injuries, among them 49 children and 42 women, while 166 civilians were abducted. The center emphasized that these figures represent the verified final results of extensive field documentation and data analysis.
The report highlights that these violations coincided with a military escalation by Houthi forces in the southern, western, and southeastern rural districts of the governorate. These actions, which include artillery and missile shelling, home raids, and the looting of public and private property, are part of an ongoing effort to seize control of these areas while maintaining a protracted siege on Taiz city. The material damage is extensive, affecting 637 homes, 119 educational facilities, 190 mosques, and 131 health centers.
Geographically, the violations extended across 14 districts, with Al-Shamayatayn recording the highest number of incidents at 276. Other heavily affected areas include Al-Mawasit, Jabal Habashi, and Al-Silw. The report notes that the systematic nature of these attacks suggests a deliberate strategy to exhaust the civilian population rather than collateral damage, potentially constituting crimes against humanity under international law.
The Taiz Rights Center has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities against civilians and the lifting of the siege on Taiz, including the reopening of roads and humanitarian corridors. Additionally, the organization urged the United Nations and the international community to exert greater pressure on the Houthi leadership, support independent investigative mechanisms, and ensure accountability for those responsible for these grave human rights abuses.
